City of Houston Compostable Bags Required As Of April 5
![]()
Join the City of Houston and Go Green! Effective April 5, 2010, if you are going to bag up yard waste, it must be in an approved compostable bag displaying the City of Houston logo. A regular trash bag can take over 100 years to decompose! But when it comes to yard waste, like grass clippings and leaves, you have choices: grasscycling, composting, or the use of compostable bags. So why fill up the landfills? By diverting this material from area landfills, the city anticipates saving at least $1.5 million dollars annually while preserving the environment and valuable landfill space. The Solid Waste Department (SWD) will use these savings to add more Houstonians to the Automated Recycling Program.
Please go to the SWD website at www.houstonsolidwaste.org to find a current list of retailers and more information regarding the compostable bag program.

City Of Houston Flooding And Drainage Survey
The City of Houston Flooding and Drainage Committee has created an online survey at
www.houstontx.gov/council/1/floodingsurvey.html
This survey will help guide the Committee as it assesses the City's drainage infrastructure and seeks to upgrade the City's storm water management capabilities. Your opinions and experiences related to those issues will aid the Committee in determining current and long term needs.
The Flooding and Drainage Committee is charged with considering regulatory and permitting functions affecting flooding and drainage incorporated in Code of Ordinances Chapter 19 (Floodplain) and 47 (Storm Drainage Discharge); long-range planning for funding of drainage infrastructure; communication with affected stakeholders, including recommendations concerning coordination with other entities such as the federal and state government, Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery Counties and the Harris County Flood Control District.
This survey is for committee guidance purposes only; all constituent requests for infrastructure improvements should be directed through the normal CIP process.
